PERADON SPONSORS LONG RUNNING JUNIOR SERIES
Peradon, the Liverpool based sponsors of former world champion John Parrott, are this year expanding their sponsorship and supporting Worthing based Frank Sandell Snooker's junior tournament series. The 1999 Peradon Grand Prix Series consists of nine events for players between the ages of seven and eighteen predominantly drawn from the Frank Sandell Coaching Schools which are spread along the South Coast and carries trophies and prizes worth a total of around £2500.
The series opens at the marvellous Triangle club in Chichester with the Marsh Labels Team Championship which sees 16, five man, teams representing the various Frank Sandell Coaching Schools. Favourites to retain their title are the Worthing A team whose players have won the tournament for the last two years.
The singles tournaments run between April and October with the tournaments spread evenly between Worthing's New Central Club and Chichester's Triangle. The six tournaments are sponsored by local companies and businesses and include The Roundstone Car Centre of Angmering, Medata Ltd of Yapton, The Mandarin of Worthing and CGS (Brighton) Ltd.
The series looks like being a very closely contended affair. Defending Grand Prix Champion Matthew Barnes of Newhaven is still eligible and his consistency will be greatly tested by the greatly talented 1997 Champion Scott Miller of Brighton. Bexhill's Jimmy Robertson must be considered a strong possibility for becoming the youngest ever champion after raising his highest break to 143 at only 12 years of age. Horsham's former County junior champion David Morgan must also be rated amongst the group of likely tournament winners with a large pack of players just behind these four.
Matthew Stadius of Chichester will be looking to build upon his last eight finish in the English U15 championship and Blane Torode of Littlehampton will be looking to continue his winning streak from last season when he won the last two events - the Doubles championship with Robertson and the Family Doubles tournament with his father.
Following the singles events the Peradon Doubles Championship in November sees the presentations to the major winners of the series including awards to the best performer of the year relative to their ability, the newcomer of the year award and the prestigious G. F. Sandell Memorial trophy for the Club-man of the year which goes to the member whose overall contribution to the coaching schools and tournaments best reflects the coaching school motto of Friendship, Sportsmanship and Skill.
The series ends in December with the Christmas Family Match at the New Central Club where the more junior players team up with an adult relative to play a doubles competition with a huge number of prizes and trophies.
