COLEY AND BARNES FINISH ON A HIGH

Bexhill's David Coley, 17, and Double Grand Prix Champion Matthew Barnes, 18, of Eastbourne ended their participation in the Frank Sandell Grand Prix Series' by winning the Peradon Doubles Championship at Chichester's Triangle Club.

The day started in the best possible way with Barnes recording the highest break of the £2500 Peradon Grand Prix Series in his very first frame - a superb 114 clearance. The pair dropped just one frame all day - to East Grinstead's Kevin Ward, 14, and James Dew, 14, who put in a superb performance as they had their best ever main draw results in reaching the quarter-finals.

Barnes and Coley won the final 2-0 against Brighton's Scott Miller, 17, and Jamie Walsh, 17. The victory gave Barnes his fifth title of the season and took his total prize money to over £400.

Semi-finalists were James Thorpe, 16, and David Norman, 16, of Lancing who lost 2-1 to Miller and Walsh, whilst Barnes and Coley beat Chichester's number two seeds Matthew Stadius, 14, and Gareth Gaffney, 16, 2-0. Chichester's top two pairs met in the last eight with Stadius and Gaffney beating Christian Chislett, 12, and Nathan Ireland, 17, 2-0.

The best performance of the day undoubtedly came from Worthing pair Billy Rushton, 10, and Chi Keung Tsang, 8, who reached the quarter-finals of the main draw before being narrowly beaten 2-1 by Norman and Thorpe. On top of their quarter-final prizes, Rushton and Tsang also received a John Parrott Performance award each.

The third John Parrott award went to Tom Reeves, 14, of Southwick who won his third handicap event in a row with partner Luke Fulton, 14, also of Southwick following his two singles wins in July and September.

Fulton and Reeves beat Worthing pair Luke Karchewski 15, and Lee Morley, 18, in the final. Semi-finalists were 1999 Peradon Handicap Grand Prix Champion Chi Wah Tsang, 11, and Michael Collier, 12, from Worthing and Chichester pair James Rowledge and Oliver Goldsmith, both 17.

The day also saw the presentation of the major awards in the Peradon series. The most prestigious award was made to Neil Morris, 17, from Worthing who was awarded the GF Sandell Memorial Trophy for the Clubman of the Year. This prize is given each year to a member of the Frank Sandell Coaching School who for a number of years has best upheld the motto of Friendship, Sportsmanship and Skill. Morris is a fine young player with a superb attitude to both the game and his peers.

Jimmy Robertson, 13, of Bexhill who was unable to defend the doubles title he had won the previous year further upheld this motto. Robertson was playing in the English Under 15's qualifiers at Woking and after winning all his matches without dropping a frame returned to Bexhill via Chichester to support his friends and watch the conclusion of a series in which he has been a major player.

Worthing's Thai Phan, 15, was awarded best overall performance of the year and received a hand made Golden Rose cue and extension worth around £150.00 and his club-mate Nam Nguyen, 15, received the best newcomer award.

Chichester's Matthew Stadius was the lucky player who won all his entry fees for the year back and Worthing's Daniel Lamb picked up two tickets to the UK Championships.
