THE 1999 MARSH LABELS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The fourth running of this annual event for the Frank Sandell Snooker Team Trophy held at the marvellous Triangle Club, Chichester finally saw the host team win the event after losing in the final the for the previous two years.

The event comprised of 16 five player teams drawn from the Frank Sandell Coaching Schools across Sussex and each player was handicapped to gain equality across the tournament.

The winning Chichester team of Chris Francis (Capt.), Matthew Stadius, Christian Chislett, Nathan Ireland and Gareth Gaffney were seeded four for the tournament and played a team in the final that were seeded 14. The Wanderers team captained by Katie Lockett of Crawley consisted of three players from the Horsham coaching school, Lockett, Hugh Lawrence and Matthew Golesworthy and two of the younger players from Worthing - Billy Rushton and his friend Jimmy White! The score in the final was 7-3 to Chichester but the Wanderers performed brilliantly on the day and fully deserved to reach the final.

The number one seeds and holders, Worthing A were knocked out in the first round by the least experienced team in the event, Chichester C. However they recovered from this early shock to regain some credibility by winning the Plate event, beating Lancing B in the final.

The highest break of the day was by 13 year old Matthew Stadius of Chichester who made a 53 - a good break in short matches when giving the opposition head start.

The John Parrott Performance awards went to White, James Thorpe and James Nimmo both of Lancing. They each received a trophy and a certificate personally signed by John Parrott who is supporting this years series of Junior tournaments through his sponsors, the Peradon company of Liverpool.

The players will now be moving on to Worthing on the 18th April for the first singles event of the 1999 Peradon Grand Prix Series and a chance to win a share of £2500 worth of cash, trophies and prizes on offer this year.
