TON-UP JIMMY JUST MISSES OUT

Twelve year old Jimmy Robertson was pipped at the line in the final of the 1999 Roundstone Car Centre Championship, the first singles event of the £2500, 1999 Frank Sandell Snooker and Peradon Grand Prix series.

Robertson, from Bexhill, began the final brilliantly by make an 102 clearance, the first time in the 17 year history of the Grand Prix that a century had been made in the final. Reigning Grand Prix Champion Matthew Barnes of Eastbourne had to draw on all his experience to come back and win on the black of the final frame in front of a very large and enthusiastic audience, with the vast majority supporting Robertson, five years Barnes' junior. Cash, trophies and prizes were presented by Brian Trigg, the Managing Director of The Roundstone Car Centre.

Over 100 juniors participated in the event with around 50% coming from the Worthing Coaching School. Top Worthing player was Niven Beaumont who was narrowly beaten in the quarter-finals and now finds himself at fifth in the rankings - his highest ever position. Damian Donovan and Daniel Pickering, both from Worthing also reached the last eight.

Eight year old Chi Keung Tsang of Worthing caused a major upset on his way to reaching 33rd position in the rankings and almost set up a clash with Barnes before being beaten on the final ball by Lars Attwood of Lancing. Attwood's overall performance and the sportsmanship he showed on the day earned him a John Parrott Performance Award provided by Parrott's sponsors Peradon of Liverpool who are backing this years Grand Prix.

The Senior Handicap event was won by Chichester's Oliver Goldsmith who beat Lancing's Terry Locke and the Junior Handicap was won by James Dew of East Grinstead who beat Chris Dynes of Chichester who was in his first ever singles competition.
