BARNES KEEPS JIMMY IN HIS POCKET.

Defending Frank Sandell Grand Prix Champion Matthew Barnes, 17, of Eastbourne regained the lead in the 1999 Peradon series by beating 13 year old Jimmy Robertson in the final of the Mandarin Championship at the New Central Club in Worthing. Leading by 20 and with the final frame at his mercy, Robertson caught his trouser pocket as he played the penultimate red causing him to miss and leave Barnes a 40 clearance to take the title 2-1.

In a day of upsets, only seven of the top sixteen reached the sixth round, but by the semi-finals the big four of Barnes, Robertson, Scott Miller and David Morgan again made up the semi-final line-up. Morgan who was celebrating his eighteenth birthday was beaten 2-1 by Barnes whilst Miller, who had earlier made the highest break of the day, a fine 87, was beaten 2-0 by Robertson.

Nathan Ireland of Chichester, a seeded player beaten in his first match, made up for his early shock by winning the senior handicap event against Daniel Stirling of Lancing 1-0. The junior handicap was won by another Chichester player - Matthew Talman who beat Worthing's Sam Lamb 1-0 in the final.
