FLUKY BARNES WINS 3rd TITLE IN BATTLE OF COUNTY CHAMPIONS

A fluked re-spotted black in the final frame was all that could separate East Sussex Junior Champion Matthew Barnes and his West Sussex counterpart David Morgan in the final of the CGS (Brighton) Ltd. Challenge, the fourth event of the £2500, 1999 Frank Sandell and Peradon Grand Prix Series. On the hottest day of the year over 100 entrants enjoyed a great day of snooker in the excellent and well air-conditioned Triangle Club at Chichester.

Defending Grand Prix Champion Barnes, 17, of Eastbourne made it three wins from the first four singles events by beating Morgan, 18, from Crawley, 2-1 to maintain his lead in the 1999 rankings. Barnes had earlier in the day moved the series highest break up again by recording a clearance of 113 in his 2-0 semi-final victory over Scott Miller, 16, from Brighton.

Morgan reached the final by beating first time semi-finalist Damian Donovan, 16, from Worthing 2-1. Donovan's best ever performance saw him take out hot prospect Jimmy Robertson, 13, of Bexhill in the quarter finals, a defeat which now leaves Robertson 20 points adrift of Barnes at the top of the rankings.

The junior handicap final saw two players from the Chichester Frank Sandell Coaching School going head to head at their home club with Cfyn Markwick-Day, 11, taking his first title by beating Chris Dynes, 15. The senior handicap was won by Tom Reeves, 14, from Southwick who beat Brighton's Jamie Walsh. Dynes and Walsh, 16, were both appearing in their second finals of the year and are now joint leaders in the Handicap Grand Prix Rankings along with Worthing's Michael Collier and Chichester's Oliver Goldsmith.
