BARNES ON THE BRINK

Matthew Barnes is just one match away from retaining his title as Peradon Grand Prix champion after winning the Flintlease Chichester Classic in the £2500, 1999 Frank Sandell Series.

Barnes made it four wins from five finals as he again beat Bexhill's precocious young talent, Jimmy Robertson. Barnes also made the highest break, 98, in his first frame of the day and just missed the second to last red with a 141 total clearance well on.

Robertson should now secure second place but an early upset in the final tournament could allow West Sussex County Champion David Morgan the chance to nick the runners up spot.

History was made in the Junior Handicap event as for the first time in the 17 year history of the Grand Prix Series, two brothers met in the final. Worthing's Chi Wah Tsang, 11, and younger brother Chi Keung, 8, went head to head for the title. Chi Keung came out on top after clearing the last three colours with some excellent potting to win by just two points.

Consolation came for Chi Wah as he moved joint top of the handicap rankings and in with a great chance of the Grand Prix Handicap title at the South Coast Classic at the New Central Club, Worthing, in October.

Joining Chi Wah at the top of the rankings is Southwick's Tom Reeves, 14,  who won his second Senior Handicap title in a row, beating Lancing's David Norman, 16, in the final.
