BARNES THE CHAMP
Matthew Barnes, 18, from Eastbourne became only the second person to retain the title of Grand Prix Champion following the final event of the 1999 Peradon and Frank Sandell Snooker Grand Prix Series.
Barnes reached all six singles finals, winning four and also made the highest break of the season - 113. His consistency, determination and desire to retain his title were decisive factors in the successful defence of the title he won 12 months ago.
Runners-up spot went to Jimmy Robertson, 13, of Bexhill who won the other two events and was beaten by Barnes in three other finals. Robertson will now be joint favourite for next year's Grand Prix series along with Brighton's Scott Miller, 17. Barnes and West Sussex County Champion David Morgan, 18, will be ineligible.
These four dominated the series and invariably made up the semi-final line-up. With two gone, a number of players must fancy their chances for increased success next season.
The Handicap Grand Prix Champion is Chi Wah Tsang, 11, of Worthing. Tsang became the first person to be crowned champion without winning an event. Consistency was again the key as a quarter-final, three semi-finals and one runners-up spot gave him the title. Second place went to his younger brother, Chi Keung, 8, who had reached two finals during the season, ironically beating his older brother at the Flintlease Chichester Classic in September.
Over 130 players competed in the singles section of the Grand Prix Series and after the doubles and family doubles are completed, around 180 different juniors will have taken part in the UK's biggest junior snooker tournament series.
