EIGHT-YEAR-OLD ALUN WINS TOURNAMENT HE DIDN'T EVEN ENTER!

He started the day as an interested spectator, but by the end of the day, he was the star of the show. Eight-year-old Alun Bowen from Worthing found himself taking part in the Peradon Doubles Championship after another player dropped out through sickness.

Matthew Golesworthy, 17 from Cranleigh in Surrey arrived at Chichester's Triangle Club to find that his partner would not be joining him. Instead of dropping out, he showed great sportsmanship in agreeing to take Alun, who joined the Worthing coaching school earlier this year, as his partner.

After being eliminated in the main draw they entered the Handicap event and played really well to reach the final against Aaron Coulson, 12, and Michael Hayward , 13, of Lancing. Despite giving the Lancing pair a head-start, Golesworthy and Bowen played extremely well as a team and took the title. Unsurprisingly, they also picked up the Best Performance Awards.

The main competition was won by Chichester pair Christian Chislett, 13 and Gareth Gaffney, 17. They beat Worthing youngsters Billy Rushton, 11, and Chi Keung Tsang, 9, two frames to one. Rushton and Tsang far exceeded their tenth seeding to reach the final. They also overcame Tsang's elder brother Chi Wah, 12 and his partner Michael Collier, 13, 2-0 in the semi-finals - another great performance from the 14th seeded pair. Chislett and Gaffney reached the final with a narrow 2-1 victory over number one seeds Simon Lawrence, 18 and Damian Donovan, 17 of Worthing in the semi-finals.
