A VERY 'GOODWIN' AT CHRISTMAS
Eighty-eight pairs of juniors from the Frank Sandell coaching schools and their adult partners competed for a vast array of prizes in the A&M Trophies Christmas Family Match at Worthing's New Central Club. The final event of the Peradon and Frank Sandell Grand Prix Series 2000 also allowed the first 72 eliminated pairs a second chance in the Handicap event.
Worthing's Daniel and David Goodwin took the honours as they won the main draw, defeating another Worthing pair Simon and Andrew Lawrence 2-1. The Goodwin's defeated Daniel and Keith Gould 2-0 in the semi-finals with some great potting from David Goodwin. The Gould's had earlier caused the biggest upset of the day in the quarter-finals by eliminating defending champion Christian Chislett, this year playing with elder brother Alex.
The bottom half of the draw went to seeding with the Lawrence's, seeded 2, defeating number three seeds Callum and Roger Mo from Portsmouth 2-0.
The Handicap event was won by last year's beaten finalists Katie and Malcolm Lockett who defeated the host club's Billy and Tim Rushton. The beaten semi-finalists were all from the New Central Club - Chi Keung and Frankie Tsang losing to the Rushton's whilst Thai and Michael Phan were edged out by the Lockett's on the black.
Over a quarter of the pairs that entered the competition went home with a prize as the New Central Club put up their usual excellent array of Christmas prizes. The youngest competitor was just 6 years old and the eldest 79!
