MILLER NEARS THE FINISHING LINE
Scott Miller, 18, of Brighton made it four out of four as he won the CGS (Brighton) Ltd Challenge at Chichester's Triangle Club in the Peradon and Frank Sandell Snooker Grand Prix Series 2000. This equals the best unbeaten run in the history of the Series.
Miller's victory in the fourth ranking event of the season combined with the absence of second placed Jimmy Robertson (Bexhill), 14, puts him 45 points clear of his nearest rival. Victory in the Flintlease Chichester Classic on the 8th October would not only guarantee Miller the Grand Prix title, which he first won in 1997, but would also move him ahead of Worthing's Aron Stanley who won four in a row back in 1991. Miller dropped only one frame all day - in his first match against Worthing's David Trounce, 14. He quickly put the rest of the field back in their place in the next round though, recording the day's highest break of 98. The final saw Miller facing first time finalist Chris Francis, 17, of Chichester who made the most of Robertson's absence to move to third in the rankings. A 51 break in the first frame saw the Brighton player quickly on his way to a 2-0 victory.
Miller reached the final with a 2-0 victory over Worthing's Damian Donovan, 17, whilst Francis despatched Worthing's Russell Constantine, 15, making his first ever semi-final appearance by the same scoreline.
In the Handicap events, the junior section was won by Brighton's Jake Flynn, 12, who beat Chichester's Jason Ewens, 14. Having already won the Junior Handicap at the first event of the series, Ewens now jointly leads the Handicap rankings with Lancing's Stefan Chandler, 10 who was beaten by Flynn in the quarter finals. The senior section saw two members of the Lancing Coaching school reach the final with Andrew Cummins, 17, defeating club-mate Gary Downie, also 17. The best performance awards went to Pulborough's Ben Dudman, 14, who reached the senior handicap semi-final in his first tournament and to Worthing's Amy Shipley, 16, who reached the last 32 of the main competition.
