MAGICAL MILLER SETS THE STANDARD
Scott Miller, 18, of Brighton made it an historic five wins out of five as he won the Flintlease Chichester Classic at the Triangle Club in the Peradon and Frank Sandell Snooker Grand Prix Series 2000. Miller's success in the penultimate ranking event of the season also guarantees him the title of Grand Prix Champion that he first won back in 1997.
Miller has lost only eight frames all season and responded to Worthing's Russell Constantine, 16, in the quarter-finals by making a 108 break, the highest of the day, to take the match 2-1. Miller jawed the yellow for a 135 total clearance. To reach the final Miller beat Worthing's Neil Morris, 18, whose potential is now starting to show. Miller's opponent in the final was Jimmy Robertson, 14, of Bexhill who has now lost four finals to Miller this season. Robertson reached the final with 2-0 victories over Chichester's Gareth Gaffney, 17 and in the semi-finals Simon Lawrence, 18 of Worthing. The final was a scrappy affair, but Miller saw off Robertson 2-0.
In the Handicap events, the junior section was won by Worthing's in-form Michael Collier, 12, who beat club-mate David Trounce, 14. The senior event was won for the second time this season by East Grinstead's Daniel Gould, 15 who beat Worthing's Billy Rushton, 11. Rushton may only be just eleven, but he was seeded 16 for the main event and he made up for his surprise third round exit to reach the final of this consolation event. Gould is now the firm favourite to take the Handicap Grand Prix title as he is ten points clear in the rankings of nearest rivals Collier, Jason Ewens of Chichester and Stefan Chandler of Lancing.
The best performance awards went to Worthing's Sam Dennis, 12, who reached the quarter-final of the main draw for the first time and East Grinstead's Mark Bright who knocked out two seeded players before meeting Robertson in round four.
The final singles event of the season is the Marsh Labels South Coast Classic at Worthing's New Central Club on the 29th October where the Grand Prix title will be presented to Miller and the chasing pack will be looking to steal the title from Gould in the Handicap section.
