CLEAN SWEEP FOR MILLER
Brighton's Scott Miller, 18, made it a perfect clean sweep as he won the sixth and final ranking event of the Peradon and Frank Sandell Snooker Grand Prix Series 2000. Miller's victory in the Marsh Labels South Coast Classic at Worthing's New Central Club came about with the loss of just two frames all day giving him a record for the season of having played 36 matches, won 72 frames, with only ten frames against.
Miller wasted no time in the last 16 by making a 101 break, the highest of the day, to beat Worthing's Lars Attwood, 15, 2-0. Miller was then made to sweat before beating Worthing's Blane Torode, 14, 2-1 in the quarter-finals. The host club's Damian Donovan, 17, was despatched in the semi-finals, setting up a fifth meeting in a final this season Jimmy Robertson, 14, of Bexhill. Robertson dropped just one frame in reaching the final - against eleven-year-old Billy Rushton of Worthing in the last sixteen. - but he was lucky not to be defeated by the youngster who was just one ball from victory in the final frame. Rushton picked up a Best Performance award for his efforts, along with Chichester's Callum Mo, 13 who also reached the last sixteen. Robertson took a frame from Miller n the final but it wasn't enough to stop Miller completing his 100% record for the season with a 2-1 win over his nearest rival
In the Handicap events, nine players were still in contention to take the Handicap Grand Prix series at the start of the day. Leader going into the event, Daniel Gould, 15, of East Grinstead was defeated in the third round of the senior before picking up any ranking points by club-mate Mark Bright, 11. Bright went on to reach the final before losing to another East Grinstead player - 15 year-old James Dew.
Gould's early exit left the door open for one of the other contenders to steal the title. Most fell at the first hurdle whilst Jimmy White, 13 of Worthing was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the junior event. However, Michael Collier, also 13, seized the opportunity and by winning his semi-final match against Chichester's Arron Cotton, 11, he secured enough ranking points to pip Gould to the title by just five points. Following the tension of the semi-final, the final was a more flowing affair with Brighton's Jake Flynn, 12, taking his second Junior Handicap title of the season.
