GOULD AND PATEL TAKE 2001 PERADON DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
East Grinstead pair Pritesh Patel, 15, and Daniel Gould, 17 won their first Frank Sandell Grand Prix series titles when they lifted the Peradon Doubles Championship at Chichester's Triangle Club.
In a day of surprises, it was number seven seeds Gould and Patel who came out on top as 56 pairs competed for the title. Victory in the final was achieved with a 2-1 victory over number four seeds Stefan Canavan and David Dunn, both 15, of the host club. Canavan and Dunn reached the final with a 2-1 victory over Luke Fulton and Tom Reeves, both 16 from Worthing, who had eliminated number one seeds Craig Peadon, 13, and Richard Kinnard, 14, of East Grinstead, 2-1 in the quarter-finals.
Gould and Patel reached the final with a fine 2-0 victory over last season's champions Christian Chislett, 14, and Gareth Gaffney, 18, of the host club.
Biggest shock of the day was the third round exit, their first match, of Chichester's number two seeds Joe Lloyd, 15, and Matthew Stadius, 16, who were beaten by two youngsters from the same club - Arron Cotton, 13, and Spencer Webb,12.
Lloyd and Stadius went on to reach the final of the Handicap event, but unfortunately Lloyd finished on the losing side in a final for the third time this season as Brighton's Curtis Lambert, 16, and East Grinstead's Sonny Daniels, 11, came out on top.
Highest break of the day was 50 by Richard Kinnard - a good break in doubles play and 172 frames of snooker were completed.
Earlier in the day the annual Frank Sandell Coaching School and Grand Prix series awards were made. First prize winner was Jake Flynn, 13, of Brighton who won back all of his entry fees for the season - a fitting winner after he was beaten up in the street in Brighton with his snooker cue broken in the process.
East Grinstead's Craig Peadon and Richard Kinnard were awarded Best Performers of the Year awards and Worthing's Martin Lloyd, 16, received a Peradon Cue and Case kit as the Best Newcomer of the Year. The final and most prestigious award is the GF Sandell Clubman of the Year award which goes to the Coaching school member who most typifies the motto of Friendship, Sportsmanship and Skill. For the first time after twenty years of the award, it was jointly presented to Luke Fulton, 16, and Daniel Lamb, 17, of Worthing.
Thee season will close with the Christmas Family Match on the 16th December at Worthing's New Central Club where at least 80 pairs of juniors and their adult partners will compete in a fun doubles competition.
