IT'S EAST GRINSTEAD AGAIN
East Grinstead B won the first event of the season - the Roundstone Car Centre Team Event - taking over the title from their A team who they eliminated 6-2 in the quarter-finals.
Twenty-four teams of 4 players representing the Frank Sandell Coaching Schools took part in this handicapped event which opens the 2001 Grand Prix series. Such was the quality of the handicapping almost 50% of the matches required a sudden death play-off frame.
The final saw the East Grinstead team pitted against Brighton's A team with wins from Richard Kinnard and Craig Peadon and a draw from James Dew leading East Grinstead to a 5-3 victory. Curtis Lambert with a 2-0 victory over Sonny Daniels and Neal Gozzett drawing with Dew gained Brighton's points.
Perhaps the best performance of the day came from Chichester's D team who excelled themselves to reach the semi-finals before going down 7-1 to Brighton. East Grinstead B disposed of the favourites and number one seeds Chichester A, 5-3 in the other semi-final.
The plate event final was contested by two teams from Worthing's New Central Billiard Hall, with the A team overcoming last season's main draw beaten finalists NCBH E 3-2 in a sudden death decider. Wins for James Gardiner and Sam Dennis for the A team were countered by Chi Keung Tsang and Michael Collier for the E team. The play-off drew players from a hat and James Gardiner prevailed over Michael Collier to give the plate title to the more senior team.

The best performance awards went to Ben Pitman of Lancing C and nine year old Richard Main of Chichester, who after only coming to watch his club-mates, filled a gap left by sickness in the NCBH G team and won 3 of his 4 frames.
