JIMMY FIRST TO SHOW IN 2001 SERIES
Bexhill's Jimmy Robertson, 14, took the first ranking title of the season in Frank Sandell Snooker's 2001 Roundstone Car Centre Grand Prix series. Robertson took the Hazel Reed Championship at Chichester's Triangle Club without dropping a frame all day.
After beating Matthew Stadius, 16 of Chichester in the quarter-finals he met 13 year old Richard Kinnard of East Grinstead in the semi-finals. Kinnard, in his first season in the series did magnificently to reach the semi-finals and picked up a Best Performance award to add to his semi-finalist prize and the team event title which his East Grinstead side won in March.
Robertson's opponent in the final was the host club's Christian Chislett, 14, appearing in his first ranking final. Breaks of 46, 42, 41 and 33 saw Robertson safely to a 2-0 victory, but Chislett has put himself in an excellent position to be challenging for honours throughout the season. Chislett reached the final by defeating the number two seed Neal Gozzett, 17, of Brighton 2-1 in the last sixteen after requiring a snooker in the final frame, East Grinstead's Mark Bright, 11, 2-1 in the quarter-finals and then Lancing's Neil Francis, 17, 2-1 on the black to claim his place against Robertson.
The finals of the Handicap Events featured players from Worthing, Lancing, Chichester and Cranleigh in Surrey. The Junior event was won by Worthing's Alex Richardson who beat fellow 11-year-old Stefan Chandler of Lancing. The senior event was won by Chichester's Scott Sparrow, 17, who beat Cranleigh's Matthew Golesworthy, also 17.
