FIRST TITLE TAKES DEW TO THE TOP
East Grinstead's James Dew, 15, took his first Frank Sandell Grand Prix title when he lifted the Marsh Labels Championship at Worthing's New Central Club. His win also moved him to the top of the 2001 Roundstone Car Centre Grand Prix series, five points ahead of Matthew Redfern, aged 18, of Southbourne who won the second event of the season.
Dew reached the final by beating 12-year-old club-mate Mark Bright, 2-1, in the semi-finals. Bright had reached the semi-finals without dropping a frame, which included the scalp of Chichester's number one seed Dave Dunn, 15, in the quarter-finals. Victory in the final was achieved by two frames to nil against Chichester's 16-year-old Matthew Stadius. Stadius had eliminated number two seed Redfern in the semi-finals 2-1. Stadius made the highest break of the day in his fourth round match, a 40, against Stefan Canavan.
Canavan, 14, more than compensated for his defeat by recovering to win the Senior Handicap event, beating club-mate Joe Lloyd, also 14 in the final. This was Lloyd's second final defeat in a row but consolation was found in the fact that he now tops the Handicap rankings. The Junior Handicap was won by Worthing's Jimmy White, 14, who beat Lancing's David Francis, also 14.
