DEW TAKES SECOND EVENT TITLE AND GRAND PRIX CHAMPIONSHIP

With six players in with a chance of winning the 2001 Roundstone Car Centre Grand Prix Series, the leader after five events made sure that there were no last minute upsets as he won the Mandarin South Coast Classic at Worthing's New Central Club to take his second title of the season and the overall Grand Prix Series title.

Dew, 16, of East Grinstead, struggled through most of his matches and should have been beaten by  Billy Rushton,12, in the quarter finals as the Worthing player had a number of chances to win the match, but eventually Dew got through by two frames to one.

Dew's game improved once he knew that the Grand Prix title was his as during his 2-0 semi-final victory over the host club's Daniel Goodwin, 17, his last remaining rival Matthew Stadius, 16, was beaten 2-0 by Worthing's Ben Rich, 17 in the other semi.

The pressure was clearly off Dew in the final and he looked comfortable as he took the title 2-0 over first time finalist Rich.

Hunters Inn performance awards went to East Grinstead's Sonny Daniels, 11, who won four matches before losing to Rich in the quarter-finals and Stuart Crees, also 11, of Worthing who reached the Junior Handicap semi-finals.

Crees was beaten by club-mate Edward Evans, 13, but he was prevented from winning the title by Chichester's Spencer Webb, 12.

East Grinstead's Craig Peadon, 13, who had reached the final of the main event in the previous tournament but was eliminated in the fourth round this time, gained consolation by winning the Senior Handicap event against Worthing's Martin Metcalfe, 17. Metcalfe beat Chichester's Joe Lloyd, 15, in the semi-finals when victory would have given Lloyd the Handicap Grand Prix title. His defeat meant that the series was tied and that a play-off would be required with Worthing's James Kipping, 13.
